History of the Collaborative
Parallel Denominational Histories
Our founding denominations—the Quakers (Earlham College), the Mennonites (Goshen College), and the Church of the Brethren (Manchester College)—are known collectively as the three “historic peace churches.”
During World War II many of our students and alumni were conscientious objectors who led in the development of the Civilian Public Service (CPS) as an alternative to military service. In those challenging times, others made equally difficult choices to serve in the armed forces.
When World War II ended, members of our denominations were leaders in the renewal and reconciliation that followed tragic conflict. Their involvement in the reconstruction of Europe and Asia and their leadership of new international organizations contributed greatly to a remarkable chapter in the history of humankind when, uniquely, the victors reached out to the vanquished.
